Overview

My role

My role

My role

FitMind is a fitness app that focuses on making habits in order to achieve your goals in a healthy way.

UX and Product Designer. Worked in a team of two.

The Problem

A UK study was conducted on teenagers and adults concerning their body image.

One in five adults (20%) felt shame, just over one third (34%) felt down or low, and 19% felt disgusted because of their body image in the last year.

Just over one in five adults (21%) said images used in advertising had caused them to worry about their body image.

Just over one third of adults said they had felt anxious (34%) or depressed (35%) because of their body image.

(Mental Health Foundation, 2019)

Body satisfaction and appreciation has been linked to better overall wellbeing and fewer unhealthy dieting behaviours.

Defining the project

What is the task or
problem?

  • People that want to start working out usually have an unhealthy relationship with their body.

  • Apps and videos use the end goal of "looking fit" to motivate users but instead makes them feel ashamed more than motivated.

  • The goal is to create an app that does not push people and make them feel uncomfortable but understands their likes and limits.

  • The fitness apps on the market are more focused on showing workouts than motivating the users to make working out a habit.

  • Habits made mindfully and over a long period of time are more likely to stick.

  • People don't always enjoy the same exercises and activities.

Who is it for?

The app is for people of any age who want to move their body in a mentally healthy way. Also made for people who lack body confidence or are afraid to workout in a crowd.

When do they use it?

The user should be able to log-in a workout at any time of the day.

Where
do they use it?

The user should be able to workout in a variety of places and with different kinds of equipment.

Essential features

For a successful product, users should be able to:

Create personalized routines for their needs and movement limit

Edit and update routines

Feel motivated

Build habits progressively

Exercise at any time of the day

Increase level of difficulty if desired

Design Decisions

Features that solve these problems:

Routines that are diverse and crafted specifically for each user

Exercises that start small and slowly build

Many exercise and activity options to choose from

IDEATE

The main message of our app is that moving our body is important and building a habit for movement will help create a healthier relationship with your body rather than craving a goal of "looking a certain way". FitMind wants to remark that: habits are built slowly and progressively. To illustrate this, we created a story of a ball. If the ball is pushed an inch, it will travel that inch and nothing more; however, place the ball on a hill, where it moves constantly, the ball will accelerate more and more each time. It will gain so much momentum, that before it knows it, it has reached its goal.

Habits work like this: it is the constant movement that helps you accelerate tremendously. Doing a habit one day only forms a small change; doing it everyday will accelerate its growth without even trying.

We want people to reach their movement goals Mindfully, Carefully, and Eventually.

Logo and Color Scheme

Since FitMind focuses on a mindful version of fitness, the color scheme has to reflect a feeling of energy and calm at the same time. The logo reflects the story previously mentioned, and is displayed in different color combinations.

High Fidelity

After several design iterations and user tests, we landed on this high fidelity mock-up. We decided to not add too many "words of encouragement" for many users do not see the advantage in them. They preferred a simple design with options to edit and a routine that goes at their own pace.

Options to edit routine and to craft a new one from scratch.

Overview of daily and weekly schedule.

Lists different exercises to go at your own pace.

Achievements and Lessons Learnt

The goal of the app was to create a motivating way to move your body by creating habits at your own pace. The app's style and illustrations, that spoke about building habits slowly and progressively, spoke to a lot of users and made them enjoy the app more.

Some pages are to be improved in the future due to users mentioning the need for a page to introduce the different kinds of workouts available.

These changes will be tested and corrected in future iterations.
